Media Release - Minister Wyatt
The Morrison Government is supporting the Mirarr people to lead Jabiru’s transition from a mining town to a tourism hub and regional service centre.
Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said a new township lease made possible with the passage of the Aboriginal Land Rights (Northern Territory) Amendment (Jabiru) Act 2020 will help the traditional owners realise their aspirations and vision for their community.
“The Mirarr people have been instrumental in looking towards the future of Jabiru as the nearby Ranger Uranium Mine ceases operations by 2021,” Minister Wyatt said.
“The Mirarr have a comprehensive masterplan to transform the local economy away from mining and into a world class tourist destination with service industries supporting economic growth in the region.”
“The passage of this Bill means economic empowerment. It is entrusting Indigenous Australians to make decisions that will benefit their communities and their people. Land security is economic security, and from economic security comes the ability to put in place the foundations that will lead to economic growth, job opportunity and a secure future for Indigenous Australians.”
“As part of the Morrison Government’s $216 million commitment to revitalise Jabiru and the Kakadu National Park, the Mirarr are growing an economically and socially vibrant community where traditional Aboriginal culture and the natural environment can flourish.”
“These amendments will help return land to the traditional owners and facilitate a long-term township lease to provide certainty for businesses and residents in Jabiru.”
“I want to also acknowledge the commitment of $135.5 million from the Northern Territory Government to breathe even more life into the revitalisation plan and ensure Jabiru and Kakadu continue to deliver benefits for the Top End.”
“This bill sets the conditions for the Mirarr people to pursue their aspirations and take full advantage of the social, cultural and economic opportunities that will be developed in the region.”
