Kinchela Boys Home recognised by World Monuments Fund
I would like to congratulate Kinchela Boys Home (KBH) Aboriginal Corporation for successfully attaining recognition for their Kempsey site on the World Monuments Watch.
Statement - Minister Wyatt
I would like to congratulate Kinchela Boys Home (KBH) Aboriginal Corporation for successfully attaining recognition for their Kempsey site on the World Monuments Watch.
As a site of truth-telling and healing, KBH is the first Stolen Generations institution to be included on the list maintained by the World Monuments Fund and joins more than 700 other culturally-significant sites worldwide.
This listing builds on their site’s current inclusion on the New South Wales State Heritage Register and its listing as an Aboriginal Place under the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974.
Stolen Generation institutions like KBH and many others are places that hold historical value and this successful nomination will draw attention to KBH’s work to support the healing journey.
I feel privileged to have met with survivors of the Kinchela Boys Home just a few weeks ago where we shared breakfast and they told me some of the hard truths on what happened there. Together, we acknowledged the importance of preserving an accurate history.
Their ongoing commitment to building mutual understanding with broader Australia and the world does not go unnoticed and this recognition is a testament to Stolen Generations institutions, survivors and their experiences.
