Indigenous broadcasters strong showing in the Community Radio Awards

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, congratulates all of the winners of the 2021 Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) Community Radio Awards. Six Indigenous broadcasters scored an impressive 19 nominations, with 5 of them taking out top honours.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, congratulates all of the winners of the 2021 Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) Community Radio Awards.

Six Indigenous broadcasters scored an impressive 19 nominations, with 5 of them taking out top honours.

“Indigenous radio stations featured in almost half of the categories this year, which stands as a testament to the depth and breadth of programming they offer,” Minister Wyatt said.

“Indigenous radio is an integral part of our communities and it’s great to see the excellent, entertaining and thought-provoking programming receive the recognition it deserves.

“The CBAA Community Radio Awards are a chance to showcase and celebrate the people behind the programs and the stations and highlight their creativity and passion in delivering high-quality content.

“Throughout COVID-19, the leadership role of Indigenous broadcasters has been more important than ever, as they have delivered trusted, tailored messaging and important health information.

“I congratulate all of the nominees for their resilience over a tough year, their innovation and ongoing commitment to serving their communities.”

The Indigenous broadcasters that won awards or were recognised as finalists are:

  • 3KND Kool ‘N’ Deadly in Melbourne, Victoria:
    • Won: Excellence in Indigenous Engagement for their initiative - 'Standing Strong Together' and Joint winner of Best Station Production for '3KND COVID-19 CSA's'.
    • Nominated for: Best New Radio Program, Best Special Event Broadcast, Outstanding Youth Contribution, Excellence in Sports Programming, Excellence in News and Current Affairs Programming, and the Station Leadership Award;
  • Ngaarda Media in Roeburn, Western Australia:
    • Won: Best Online Content for 'Wirrilimurra Lore'.
    • Nominated for: Excellence in Journalism, and the Station Leadership Award.
  • Noongar Radio in Perth, Western Australia:
    • Won: Excellence in Indigenous Broadcasting for their program 'Law Matters'; joint winner of Excellence in News and Current Affairs Programming.
    • Nominated for: Best Radio Program – Talks.
  • PAW Media in Yuendumu, Northern Territory:
    • Won: Joint winner of Best Station Production for their 'Washing Your Hands Jingle’ and Excellence in Creative Audio for their program Pina Pina Jarrimi - Warlpiri manu English.
  • Wangki Yupurnanupurru Radio in Fitzroy Crossing, Western Australia:
    • Won: Joint winner of Excellence in News and Current Affairs Programming
    • Nominated for: Excellence in Indigenous Broadcasting.
  • Radio Goolarri in Broome, WA:
    • Nominated for: Excellence in Indigenous Broadcasting.
