Media release - Minister Wyatt
Stolen Generations survivors looking to apply for the Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme will be able to access free and independent legal advice and financial counselling.
Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said that $8.97 million from the Morrison Government will enable service provider knowmore to offer free support over the phone and face‑to‑face, for the duration of the Scheme to June 2026.
“These dedicated legal and financial services will ensure that Stolen Generations survivors are able to make fully informed decisions about the impact of the receipt of a redress payment for their personal situation,” Minister Wyatt said.
“Support will be available through all stages of the process so applicants and potential applicants feel supported throughout their journey and the Scheme is as healing as possible.
“Recognising that potential applicants may now be living anywhere across Australia, the service will be provided nationally to ensure all eligible people can access the support they want.
“knowmore has been successfully providing similar support services for applicants to the National Redress Scheme, including a dedicated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement team, and will bring this experience to the Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme.”
This funding is part of the Morrison Government’s $378.6 million commitment for a financial and wellbeing redress scheme for Stolen Generations survivors who were removed as children from their families in the Northern Territory, the Australian Capital Territory prior to their respective self-government and the Jervis Bay Territory.
The Scheme will be open for applications from 1 March 2022 to 28 February 2026 and will operate until 30 June 2026.
Further information on the Scheme, including eligibility and instructions for how to apply, is available on the National Indigenous Australians Agency website at Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme.
