Media release - Minister Wyatt

The Far West Aboriginal Communities of Ceduna and surrounds in South Australia have been endorsed as an Empowered Communities region, increasing the level of decision making and self-determination of more than 1000 Indigenous people.

Minister for Indigenous Australians, the Hon Ken Wyatt AM, MP, said the Morrison Government is committing $1.3 million over two years to establish the backbone organisation that will underpin community-led planning.

"The Morrison Government is working with Indigenous leaders and communities in new ways that recognise the diversity of cultures and circumstances of Indigenous Australians,” Minister Wyatt said.

“The best outcomes are achieved when Indigenous Australians are at the centre of decision making and we are committed to supporting greater Indigenous ownership and true partnerships with Government.”

“The Empowered Communities construct gives Indigenous people a greater say in the direction of their community and fosters collaboration to set priorities, improve services and effectively apply funding.”

Member for Grey, Rowan Ramsey MP, said Empowered Communities is about governments backing Indigenous leaders to introduce and enact positive changes in their regions.
