Announcement - Services Australia

Use the ABSTUDY eKit to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to claim a payment as soon as possible.

Services Australia is asking all families and students thinking about ABSTUDY to put their claim in before the end of the year.

ABSTUDY helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians with the costs of studying or doing an Australian Apprenticeship.

To make it easier for community organisations to share information about ABSTUDY in the community, Services Australia has created an ABSTUDY eKit.

The eKit contains information about the different payments ABSTUDY students may get, depending on their age and situation.

The resources you can use to promote ABSTUDY include: news article, images, ABSTUDY payment matrix, posters, radio ad and factsheets.

Who ABSTUDY is for

ABSTUDY helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from the start of secondary studies all the way through to postgraduate study. Families can claim ABSTUDY when their child is about to start secondary studies.

If you know someone in this situation, let them know they may get help with their child’s:

  • school fees
  • boarding fees
  • travel costs
  • other school items.

Claim now for next year

It’s important for families to claim ABSTUDY early. This is so their claim is finalised in time for the start of school next year. This is especially important if a student needs to move away from home to study.

How to claim

Students doing secondary studies can claim ABSTUDY over the phone. Students starting uni, TAFE or an apprenticeship can claim ABSTUDY online. If they can’t claim over the phone or online, there’s a paper claim form.

Who can claim

Parents with children younger than 16 should apply on their behalf. Students and apprentices, who are 16 and over, or independent, can apply themselves.
