Children and COVID-19 vaccinations

Find out more about why children are not currently receiving COVID-19 vaccines.

As of 15 May 2021, more than 3 million Australian adults have been vaccinated against COVID-19. This includes thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults.

Why then are children under the age of 16 not yet approved to receive the vaccine? In the process of developing new vaccines, children as a rule are not included in initial testing. However, around the world new and expanded clinical trials are taking place for COVID-19 vaccines that do include children.

As more studies and trials are done, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) will continue to monitor the results. Once this information is assessed, the TGA will review it and make their recommendations based on the best information.

This means that some COVID-19 vaccines may become available for children in the future.
