What does your community have planned for NAIDOC Week?

The NAIDOC Local Grants round have re-opened.

The National NAIDOC Committee announced the NAIDOC Week will be held from 8-15 November 2020, following the postponement due to COVID-19.

Community organisations are invited to apply for a grant to support events and activities that celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, achievements and continuing contributions to our country and society.

All activities will need to meet government guidance aimed at reducing the risks associated with COVID-19, including requirements for physical distancing.

Organisations that had submitted an application for the NAIDOC Local Grants Round that closed in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions will need to submit a new application. They will be provided with a reference copy of their application within a week of the round opening.

The Grant Opportunity Guidelines have some additional information on requirements for grant applicants due to COVID-19. Please review this information before applying.

Ideas for activities and events that could be hosted during COVID-19 restrictions include:

  • arts and cultural activities – provide take home craft kits
  • online exhibitions, dance classes or story telling sessions
  • book or movie discussions (can be online)
  • outdoor movies
  • language classes
  • caring-for-country activities –provide seed or trees for planting
  • elders’ activities
  • events promoting reconciliation
  • activities promoting health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The 2020 National NAIDOC Week theme, ‘Always Was, Always Will Be.’ recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.

NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all Australians to celebrate Indigenous culture and the unique contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia. National NAIDOC Week will be celebrated from 8-15 November 2020.
