ABSTUDY can help people in custody to study
ABSTUDY Lawful Custody Allowance helps Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in custody with study costs.
ABSTUDY Lawful Custody Allowance helps pay for study and training costs. Students need to be Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians of any age, in lawful custody for more than 2 weeks.
Corrective services, or other education providers who provide courses to people in custody, can claim this on their students’ behalf. The allowance also helps with some of the costs of studying through a TAFE or university or continuing an apprenticeship.
Services Australia pays this allowance to cover essential course costs. These are costs students usually pay themselves. The allowance can cover things like photocopying costs, workbooks or art supplies.
Most courses are approved as long as they help someone with their future study or employment after release.
